Reception Gardens

The First Garden

After many years of planning, negotiating and hours spent at the drafting board, once all the agreements were in place and the final survey lines drawn it was time for action.

Many labourers, working under Henry Teuscher's skilful direction, would soon give Montrealers a hint of what Brother Marie-Victorin's ambitious project held in store.

The Reception Gardens were the first to be completed, and have always been the Montréal's Botanical Garden's "signature": a central pathway with flowering borders, fountains and cascading pools, set against the backdrop of the magnificent Art Deco-style administration building.

1938. Not only were the gardens, fountains and pools now complete, but conifers already flanked the pathways.

One has to wonder whether Marie-Victorin and Teuscher dreamed of what the gardens would look like 75 years later.
